Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for an Mechanical Engineer (Assembly, Integration and Testing) to join our dynamic team. The candidate will be tasked with the design of the AIT processes, procedures, equipment, jigs and fixtures. The AIT Engineer manages the manufacturing of all AIT components and the procurement of all AIT equipment. During development and production, the AIT Engineer actively participates in the integration steps and is responsible for the optomechanical integration of the complete system.

The successful candidate will join the AIT team and, therefore, also contribute towards maturing and maintaining the production procedures within the company. The position requires the ability to merge numerous multi-physics design requirements into a single solution and collaborate with optical and optomechanical engineers. Previous AIT experience in the space domain is preferred; however, having very high attention to detail and a passion for success is a must. The successful candidate can expect to be immersed in a fast-paced and challenging technical environment which offers the opportunity to push the boundaries of what is achievable with optical payloads in the CubeSat domain.

Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the Optomechanical Production team during the assembly, integration and testing of high-precision optomechanical systems for spaceborne applications. Manage and oversee all work performed by optomechanical technicians and potentially other AIT engineers, from parts acceptance through to assembly and testing of the final product.
    • Manage and maintain all integration and optical alignment instrumentation
    • Perform optomechanical assembly, integration and testing
    • Maintain detailed records of all assembly and integration performed.
  • Perform CAD of AIT hardware and Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE).
  • Managing manufacturing of designed AIT and MGSE hardware.
  • Assist with environmental testing (shock, vibration, thermal) of optical payloads when applicable.
  • Mature and improve the company’s AIT procedures.
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation such as:
    Work Instructions, Build History documentation, Test Reports, etc.
  • Perform configuration management of produced products.

Note: Due to the nature and variety of Simera Sense’s projects, additional responsibilities can be added from time to time.

Required Skills

  • Previous experience performing AIT of optical payloads or other high-precision optical instrumentation is preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a cleanroom environment and complying with quality processes is preferred but not a requirement.
  • Previous experience in mechanical design, development and manufacturing.
  • Very high attention to detail, good mechanical aptitude, and the ability to execute tasks accurately and timeously.
  • Highly proficient in verbal and written communication.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Willingness to share expertise, train others and have the ability to work in a team.
  • A proactive approach to taking ownership of the relevant technical domain within the company.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Willing to work long hours when required.
  • Experience and knowledge of optical/optomechanical systems is advantageous.
  • Experience with Siemens Teamcenter and NX software is advantageous.

Minimum Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering or related.
